Book and claim separates the environmental attributes of sustainable fuel from its physical delivery, allowing a verified credit to move from a producer to a claimant.

Book and claim can be appropriate when the buyer cannot access physical sustainable fuel through its own supply chain, but still wants to support its production and acquire the associated sustainability attributes. In a book-and-claim model, the physical fuel and its environmental attributes can follow separate paths. The buyer purchases and retires the attributes through an approved registry or programme, rather than taking physical delivery of the fuel. Before making a claim, the buyer should confirm that the relevant standard, registry rules, and reporting framework permit the intended use and wording of that claim.

Before making a book-and-claim assertion, a buyer should review evidence that shows: - the fuel or attribute was issued under the applicable programme or registry; - the production batch, fuel pathway, volume, vintage, and sustainability characteristics; - the relevant certification or verification information; - the transfer of ownership to the buyer; - the retirement or cancellation record showing the attribute cannot be used again; and - any claim guidance, methodology, or reporting requirements that apply to the buyer’s intended statement. The evidence should form a clear, auditable chain from production through transfer and retirement.

Double counting is prevented by assigning each attribute a unique record and maintaining a complete lifecycle from issuance through transfer to retirement.
